DRIVERS face massive disruption when a busy Huddersfield road shuts for the next six weekends.

Highways chiefs are to carry out major repairs on the A637 Barnsley Road, through Flockton.

And it will mean a six-mile diversion over the next six weekends.

The road is used by many drivers to get to and from the M1.

The one-mile stretch of the A637 Barnsley Road through Flockton between Haigh Lane and Hardcastle Lane will have to be closed to carry out the work safely because it is narrow.

The road will be resurfaced at weekends to minimise disruption and delay.

It will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

The work begins on Saturday, July 9, to Sunday, August 14, between 7.30am and 7pm and a diversion will be in place.

There will be no through route to traffic, but access will be available for residents up to the point where the work is taking place.

Local businesses and pubs will be open as usual during the closure periods.

The resurfacing completes a £400,000 improvement scheme through Flockton which also includes street lighting, drainage and pavement improvements.

For drivers heading from the Bretton side, the diversion is B6117 Stocksmoor Road onto Upper Lane – Netherton Lane left at the traffic lights on to A642 New Road – Wakefield Road to Lepton roundabout.
