SIX drivers were fined for using pedestrians-only parts of Dewsbury town centre at the weekend.

Now police have warned others they face the same treatment if the problem continues.

Following concerns from shoppers and traders in December, motorists were stopped and given official warnings.

But police are now handing out £60 fines to anyone ignoring the law in Dewsbury.

Sgt Gary Guy, of Dewsbury and Mirfield Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Thirty-six drivers have been given verbal warnings since the turn of the year, but the problem has continued. We have been left with no other option.

“Contravening ‘no entry’ signs is not the only issue we have here.

“A number of drivers are also using the precinct as a race track with loud exhausts and stereos.

“If these problems persist, the next step will be to report people for careless driving or even dangerous driving.

“We also have powers available which will allow vehicles to be seized.

“By cutting through the precinct and driving at speed, lives are potentially being put at risk.”
