A DRIVER had to be cut from his car after a two car smash near Elland yesterday.

Police closed the A629 Calderdale Way at 6.36pm causing rush hour misery for thousands of commuters following a collision between a blue Vauxhall Vectra and a black Vauxhall Corsa at 6.14pm.

Firefighters from Elland, Brighouse and Halifax were called to the scene on the southbound stretch of the road heading toward Huddersfield.

Firefighters were forced to cut the roof of the blue Vectra (below) in order to safely remove the male driver.

He was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary (HRI) but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The female driver of the Corsa was also taken to HRI.

Her injuries are also understood to be minor.

The road, the main route between Halifax and Huddersfield, was briefly re-opened to let queuing traffic through but was closed again to secure the scene and recover the vehicles.

It was still closed at 8.30pm.

Halifax Road Traffic Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident.
