MOTORISTS were under close inspection when Rastrick police took to the streets.

Officers spoke to parents dropping their children off outside Rastrick High School as well as other motorists driving past the Field Top Road school.

The awareness campaign was aimed at promoting safer driving and creating a safer environment for children going to and from school.

Rastrick High School supported the morning of police action, which was part of the ‘Not In My Neighbourhood’ week initiative.

Police handed out leaflets produced by Rastrick High School, Castlefields Infant School and Longroyde Junior School which aim to reduce problems outside the school gates.

They also spoke to parents about any concerns they had.

Louise Benn from Rastrick High School said: "We support WYP and their campaign to improve safety around the school for pupils and residents.

"The police were doing checks and speaking to parents and we gave them some leaflets we had produced about the issue to hand out."

It is one of many activities in the Lower Calder Valley this week aimed at getting the community involved in policing issues and for the police to take action on what they are told.

Insp Mohammed Nawaz, who heads the Lower Valley Team, said: "This week is about promoting the work that goes on every day to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour.

"It is an ideal opportunity for everyone to play their part to make our communities safer.

"The Not In My Neighbourhood week is a national initiative aimed at fostering a sense of empowerment in local communities and raising awareness among the local community of what the police and our partners do to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour.

"We have organised a range of activities to encourage our local communities to engage with us to promote the crime-fighting work that already goes on in Lower Calder Valley.

"We also want to tackle local issues that have a detrimental impact on their quality of life."

Other events planned include street briefings, a crime prevention stall and targeting those who supply alcohol to under-18s.

Today, from 4.30pm, officers will be at the Field Lane shops in Rastrick to speak to members of the community and tomorrow they will be at Somerfield in Elland from 10am until 2pm offering crime prevention advice to shoppers.
