A DRUG addict sole from a town centre shop because he needed cash.

Trevor Johnson, of Holme Park Court in Berry Brow, appeared before Kirklees magistrates.

He admitted taking a £21.99 bottle of whisky from the New Street branch of Marks & Spencer.

Magistrates were told that following the theft on August 29 the drink was recovered.

They heard that the 35-year-old tested positive for cocaine at the time of his arrest.

Mark Brookes, mitigating, said that his client hadn’t been paid and decided to steal the whisky to convert it into ready cash.

He said: “He is a long-term addict of Class A drugs.

“But his last conviction was over a year ago and he has made major inroads since.”

The solicitor told magistrates that Johnson has secured accommodation and is working with the Kirklees Lifeline drug treatment service.

Mr Brookes added that Johnson’s last drug rehabilitation order was seven years ago.

Magistrates agreed to adjourn his case for a full report, which will look at his suitability for the order.

He will be sentenced on October 1.

His one bail condition was to comply with the Drugs Intervention Programme.
