POLICE sniffer dogs picked up a suspected drug dealer as he visited a friend in a prison near Huddersfield.

During an operation on Sunday, visitors at HMP New Hall in Flockton were screened by a team of drug sniffer dogs from Yorkshire and Humberside Area Search Team.

The dogs, which were also in use in Armley jail in Leeds, highlighted four people to be searched after they picked up a scent similar to that of illegal drugs.

A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply after a quantity of suspected cannabis was recovered.

He has been released on bail while forensic tests are carried out.

Prison Service area supply reduction manager Clive Wilson said: "Illegal drugs will not be tolerated in the prisons under any circumstances and we need to dispel the myth that taking drugs into a prison is not drug dealing."

Bryan Dent, West Yorkshire Police's drug co-ordinator, said: "Anyone intending to take drugs into a prison should be warned, we will take action and you will soon find yourself on the other side of the bars."
