A £1M drugs treatment centre is to open in Kirklees.

The Wellington Street Project in Dewsbury aims to enable Lifeline Kirklees, which treats and supports drug addicts, to help more and so cut waiting times.

Kirklees Drug Action Team co-ordinator Ian Donaldson said: "This facility will hugely improve the experience of services which, we hope, will result in increased numbers of substance users having treatment and support.

"This has benefits for Dewsbury as a whole.

"Lifeline Kirklees' aim is to reduce the harm associated with substance use and to improve the lives of anyone in the community affected by it.

"It also aims to contribute to reducing the wider problems associated with substance use, such as the crime committed to pay for addiction and the wrecked lives of individuals, their families and friends."

The centre will cut waiting times for appointments because of more room.

Extra space means family members can accompany people going for treatment or other help.

Staff will begin moving into the five-storey centre from August.
