DEIGHTON residents are being offered the chance to get into the carnival spirit by helping to create their own steel band.

Carnival organisers are working with Creative Keys, a European funded project which uses the arts to bring communities together, to form a steel pan band to perform at this year's Deighton Carnival.

Places in the band are available for anyone living in the Deighton area aged between 16 and 65.

The band will be led by musician Winston Davies, formerly of the Huddersfield-based North Star Steel Pan Band.

Band members will work with Winston in the run up to the festival on Saturday, June 25 on a series of pieces he has devised for the festival.

Rehearsals for the Steel Pan Band begin on Tuesday April 12 and run every Tuesday and Thursday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at the Brackenhall Community Centre.
