A drunk football fan was caught entering the John Smith’s Stadium for a game.

Duane Chambers, 27, appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court today.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of entering a designated sports ground during a sporting event while drunk.

The offence happened on November 1 just before the 3pm kick-off between Huddersfield Town and Nottingham Forest.

Chambers, of Station Road in Nottingham, caught the attention of a police officer stood outside the South Stand.

Vanessa Jones, prosecuting, said: “He saw Mr Chambers come down the stairs and he nearly fell into another fan when he reached the bottom.

“He seemed unsteady on his feet and his speech was slurred.

“Mr Chambers turned to the officer and asked him what he had to do with the cigarette he was smoking.”

As he spoke to a steward, Chambers confirmed that he wanted to go into the football ground and was arrested.

Chambers told magistrates that he had only drunk six pints but admitted that he had a drinking problem.

Magistrates gave him a conditional discharge for 12 months but he must still pay £85 costs and £15 victim surcharge.
