A DRUNK man was arrested after hurling abuse at police officers after he twisted his ankle.

Matthew Burger, of Cross Lane in Newsome, appeared before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

He admitted being drunk and disorderly in a public place on May 11.

Vanessa Schofield, prosecuting, said the incident happened at 5am outside Burger’s home.

Police were asked to go to the address following a report of a disturbance there.

Ms Schofield said: “A lady there pointed him (Burger) out.

“He was on his back in a grassed area and was shouting and swearing.

“They tried to speak to him and he told them to f*** off.

“He was warned about his behaviour and they tried to help him on to his feet but he continued to be aggressive and was waving his arms about.”

Magistrates heard that the 21-year-old also appeared drunk and was arrested for his conduct.

Burger, who was not represented in court, said that he had been in pain at the time.

He said: “I was drunk, I twisted my ankle and that’s why I was shouting.

“They (police) then dragged me across the floor and I told them to go away.”

Magistrates fined Burger £30 and told him to pay £30 costs and £20 victim surcharge.
