FIVE thousand racing ducks have been brought out of retirement by Huddersfield Pendragon Round Table.

The yellow plastic birds - which were last in water in the 1994 Golcar Duck Race - have since been living at the Wheel pub in the village, getting restless and out of shape,

But when Pendragon found out about them they gave money to Golcar Brass Band in return for the ducks, which can be used in the Holmfirth Duck Race on July 2.

The money has provided the band with three drums.

Round Table chairman Carl Pearson - pictured with drummer Logan Hartley and some of the ducks - said: "We are very happy to be able to bring these ducks out of retirement.

"We will ensure that they are well looked after and receive good training to get them ready for the Holmfirth Duck Race and Gala.

"This is an excellent arrangement in which we have obtained extra ducks to help us to continue supporting good causes in Huddersfield.

"In return, we have provided the band with the funds they needed to buy these new instruments."

It costs £1 to buy a duck in the Holmfirth race and the first prize is £1,000.

This year's sponsors are Yorkshire Water, Masterfoods, Fitness First and VirtualHuddersfield.com
