THE Dukes are on their way!
Troops from Burma Company of the 1st Battalion the Duke of Wellington's Regiment were today making the journey from Germany to Iraq.
More than 600 troops from the regiment - facing a Government axe - are heading back to the war-torn country from Osnabruck.
It is a second tour of duty in Iraq in only 14 months for the regiment, which recruits heavily in the Huddersfield area.
Its commanding officer, Lt-Col Phil Lewis, said: "The battalion is ready for what is likely to be a hard and demanding operational tour.
"The tremendous quality they have is their quiet vigour and determination to do a good, fair job in often highly tense, difficult situations."
* A leading Kirklees councillor has condemned the Government's plans to axe the regiment.
Tory Robert Light also
said local Labour MPs were keeping quiet on the issue, being unprepared to stand up to their Government to make sure of the regiment's existence.
