YORKSHIRE Water maintenance work in Holmfirth could soon be complete - earlier than planned.

Yorkshire Water contractors Mott MacDonald and Bentley are fitting overflows and storm screens in sewers at Towngate car park, to prevent debris flowing into the River Holme.

Residents and visitors have been suffering disruption since most of the car park closed for work in September, but the problems could soon be over.

Work is due to finish next month.

It was initially thought that contractors would have to return in January, but they say the project is ahead of schedule and they should not need to come back.

Yorkshire Water project manager Steve Cooper said: "We are aware that the scheme has meant some inconvenience but we have had few complaints and would like to thank everyone for their patience."

Mr Cooper reminded residents that Yorkshire Water staff and contractors do not need to access anyone's properties - so they should check the identity of anyone claiming to be from the agencies.
