A BERRY Brow home was damaged by fire.

Fire crews were called to Hangingstone Road after an elderly gentleman’s living room was alight early yesterday.

The pensioner managed to get himself out of the house and alerted the fire service around 1.30am.

Crew Commander Howard Lewis of Huddersfield Fire service said: “The living room was very badly damaged and luckily the gentleman managed to get out of the house very quickly.

“We believe it to be smoking materials such as a cigarette that caused the fire.”

No other houses were affected nor evacuated and the elderly man did not suffer from smoke inhalation.

Two crews from Huddersfield attended and used four breathing apparatus and one hose reel to tackle the blaze. Smoke detectors were also then fitted in the property.
