When Prime Minister David Cameron had a selfie snapped of himself staring seriously into the middle distance while talking to US President Barack Obama he probably thought it would go no further.

Cameron was discussing the ongoing situation in the Ukraine and the picture was uploaded to social network Twitter.

His snap picked up more than 5,000 retweets but also been spotted by US comedian Rob Delaney.

Cameron's picture had previously been lambasted as a 'PR stunt' making light of the Ukraine but Delaney took it a step further by lampooning the PM.

But the joke then spiralled with Twitter users, including Sir Patrick, snapping themselves with various items instead of a telephone.

Sir Patrick, originally from Mirfield and Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, joined the joke, saying he was "now patched in".

His response has now been retweeted more than 13,000 times.

The joke was picked up by many more people across Twitter - see more parodies below.
