A TEENAGER stole perfume from a Huddersfield store because he was “easily led”, a court heard.

Scott Smythe, 19, admitted theft when he appeared before Kirklees magistrates yesterday.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said that on April 20 the teen entered the King Street branch of Boots in Huddersfield town centre.

He said: “He went to the fragrance section and one bottle was selected.

“Then he took the security tag off, abandoned it, and put the perfume in a carrier bag before leaving the store.”

Smythe was stopped by staff outside the store and the perfume, worth £47.50, was recovered.

The teenager, of New Road in Halifax, told police that a friend had asked him to get the bottle.

Paul Blanchard, defending, said that his client may suffer from learning difficulties.

He said: “He has no sense of danger and is easily influenced by others.

“He considers himself easily led and was doing this for someone else”.

Magistrates ordered Smythe to pay a £50 fine, £50 towards court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
