CCTV cameras are to be installed on East Coast trains to London at a cost of £3.8m.
Operator East Coast is installing the cameras across its fleet of 43 trains to improve passenger safety.
The £3.8m programme, which is due to be completed by the end of the year, will see 1,621 CCTV cameras fitted.
Several forward-facing cameras will also be installed in the train drivers’ cabs.
The East Coast main line service links London King’s Cross and Edinburgh. Huddersfield passengers join the trains at Wakefield or Leeds.
East Coast engineering director Ian Duncan said: “The installation of CCTV cameras throughout the fleet demonstrates our investment in the rolling stock and our commitment to passenger safety.
“On the very rare occasions when a minority of individuals cause problems on our trains, CCTV systems on board will help protect passengers and our staff against anti-social behaviour, assist authorities with convictions against offenders and hopefully act as a deterrent.
“The introduction of CCTV on board our trains will help to reassure our customers that the train is a safe way to travel.”
Guy Dangerfield, manager of consumer watchdog Passenger Focus, said: “This is good news for passengers.’’
