FORMER Conservative MP Edwina Currie is known for her fearlessness.
The 64-year-old was invited along to the George Hotel to be a guest speaker for Huddersfield Ladies’ Luncheon Club yesterday.
Edwina told the Examiner she regularly speaks at dinners and events up and down the country.
She said: “It’s Yorkshire women that terrify me the most.
“They’re an intimidating audience and they bring their intelligence to the table.
“They won’t let speakers get away with speaking flannel and they give as good as they get.”
It wasn’t the first visit Edwina has made to the George Hotel.
In the early 1990s, Edwina’s daughter Debbie Currie worked part time at The George while she studied English at the University of Huddersfield.
Edwina said: “Huddersfield is looking a lot smarter than it did 20 years ago.
“The new St George’s Square is glorious – it’s fabulous – it looks so continental.
“It’s absolutely fabulous and beautifully done and it has such a magnificent train station.”
Edwina spoke to the luncheon club about some of her political heroines, including former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
She added: “At the moment we’ve got 142 women MPs, which is unbelievable, and there are 148 women in the house of Lords so that’s nearly 300 women law-makers at Westminster.
“It’s absolutely fantastic, it’s the most we’ve ever had.
“And they’re women that have got where they are by going eyeball-to-eyeball with men.”
Edwina said she believed Huddersfield would weather the Tory cuts well, adding: “Yorkshire people have always been very enterprising and skilled.
“I think we need to get back to what works.
“There are entrepreneurs all over Yorkshire and there are apprenticeships that need to be seized.”
Edwina recently featured in an election special of Come Dine With Me alongside Left wing Liverpudlian Derek Hatton, political commentator Rod Liddle and Lib Dem mayoral candidate Brian Paddick.
Having famously resigned over a gaff about salmonella in British eggs in 1988, Edwina decided to serve soufflé to her guests.
“Liddle and Hatton were at each other’s throats – it almost came to blows.
“I really enjoyed the food. I’ve been asked to come back on the show again,” she revealed.
