SOME 1,000 youngsters from across the county have been praised for their efforts at the West Yorkshire Youth Games.

Participants from schools and clubs in Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield completed a range of sports at the Beckett Park sports complex in Leeds last month.

One of the many spectators was Richard Caborn, minister for sport and tourism, who was impressed by the sporting talent on show.

Mr Caborn said: "It is vitally important that we encourage more young people to get involved in sport, and participation in the youth games is a great way to do that."

Sports development units in the five West Yorkshire districts were represented.
