COUNCILLORS in Calderdale have vowed to fight to save eight post offices from closure.

Public consultation starts next month on Post Office plans to cut the number of branches in Calderdale from 44 to 36.

It is not yet known which post offices are to be targeted.

Another five could be designated "outreach" offices – giving a reduced service, sometimes from a mobile office. The changes are part of a programme announced last year.

Supporters claim post offices provide a vital service for many people in Calderdale. The loss would be a major blow for them.

The council cabinet will meet next Monday and the six-week consultation period starts on May 13.
