AN elderly man died early today in a fire at a house in Heckmondwike.
Emergency services were called to the house in Boundary Street in the early hours and police confirmed a man was killed in the blaze.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire Service said the blaze was being investigated by police but is not thought to be suspicious.
Nobody else was believed to have been in the property at the time of the fire, a police spokeswoman added.
The alarm was raised shortly before 4.30am and fire crews from Batley and Cleckheaton were sent to the scene.
They found the fire confined to one room of the small prefabricated bungalow but remained at the scene for several hours as investigations continued into the cause of the blaze.
Police officers stood guard at the scene as the investigations continued.
A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police officers were called to a fire in Boundary Street shortly after 4.30am today.
“The fire has proved fatal to a man. The Coroner’s Officer has been informed and inquiries are now under way to try and establish the cause.
“It is not being treated as suspicious”.
