MEMBERS of Kirklees Black Elders' Group have been honoured for their achievements during Adult Learners' Week.

They are pictured at Bradley Court in Bradley, receiving certificates from the Kirklees Council Community Learning Awards tutor Jaqueline Wood.

Members of the group took part in training sessions as part of an all-age project run by Abacus, a Huddersfield charity which aims to improve people's knowledge of the African Caribbean culture.

The project encouraged African Caribbean elders to volunteer with Abacus and go into schools to pass on their history and culture to younger generations.

Schools which benefited from their wisdom included Scissett Middle School and Spring Grove Junior and Infant School at Springwood.

The project was financed by The Big Lottery Fund.

The training to make the elders ready for the project was delivered by Jackie Morgan of Huddersfield Technical College and Laurie Hawkins of Abacus.

Abacus is currently considering taking the project into secondary schools.
