BIG names promise a weekend of fun as the folk-tastic festival returns.

The famous Festival of Folk hits Holmfirth from May 8 to 10.

Top slots will be filled by singer-songwriter Eliza Carthy and BBC DJ Mark Radcliffe and his band the Family Mahone, who play the Picturedrome on Friday night.

Saturday at the same venue will include BBC Folk Festival winners Bellowhead, roots performer Ruth Notman and self-styled Celtic rockabilly combo Saor Patrol.

Keeping it local will be Marsden-born poet Simon Armitage and Roger Davies together with Simon’s rock ’n’ roll band The Scaremongers, who play Number 11 on the Thursday and Friday.

Guests filling the town’s pubs and bars include Northumbrian folk-rockers Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies and French singer Flossie Malavialle.

Fans of Leeds-born legend Jake Thackray will also be gathering to celebrate their hero on Saturday afternoon.

Other highlights include dance events and Bread and Butter Theatre, who make a return appearance to the festival.

Children will be entertained by Colonel Custard and his Punch and Judy Show on Sunday.

Festival of Folk music co-ordinator Cath Ingham said: “We’ve got a better line-up than ever because of the co-operation with other promoters such as Ged at Open Mic and Peter Carr at the Picturedrome.

“In every pub and bar that’s involved there’ll be something.

“Organising it has been complicated because of the collaborations with other promoters in Holmfirth, but that’s good because we’ve all played to our strengths.”
