They are more used to saving people trapped in crashed cars.

But a specialist fire crew from Cleckheaton tackled a different job on flood-hit Elland Bridge .

The crew used specialist cutting gear to get through steel conduit carrying phone lines, fibre-optic cables and other wires beneath the bridge.

Station Commander Lee Benson said: “It’s part of our ‘Hearts and Minds’ project and we were glad to help.

“These cables are a vital part of the local infrastructure for local businesses and it is important they are in use.

“Our guys use this equipment and their expertise in road crashes but this was a call with a difference”.

The bridge was badly damaged in the Christmas floods and will be closed for many months.
