Part of Elland Bridge near the Barge and Barrel pub collapsed in the early hours of this morning.

Andy Marshall of Rastrick Fire Station says he and his crew were called out after midnight by the police. They spent five hours there monitoring the situation.

He said: “There were concerns that there might be an explosion. The Park Road bridge has collapsed about one to one and a half metres and fractured the gas and water main.

“The electricity board tried to isolate the supplies that run across the bridge before the gas people could dig up the road.

“Park Road is the main route into Elland town centre from Brighouse and it will be a matter of months before the bridge is repaired. It is going to cause a lot of delays for people now that the road is closed.

“Someone from the canal trust came out as well to close the area to water traffic and the tow path is closed too.”

He added that is was not clear what had caused the bridge to collapse.

A police spokesman said utility companies will be working on the bridge today.

Meanwhile, The Handmade Bakery tweeted these pictures taken from Elland Bridge on Boxing Day and then 18 hours later.
