THE Elland bypass has reopened after being closed for most of the morning following a lorry shedding its load onto the road.

Shortly before 6am the lorry, travelling towards Halifax, skidded on ice, struck a kerb and spilled some of its cargo of chemical containers onto the carriageway between Elland and Salterhebble.

The road was then closed until just after 11am.

Thousands of motorists tried to use alternative routes into work and to continue their day but were caught up in traffic jams around the area.

Queues on the M62 stretched back to Chain Bar at Junction 26 as motorists getting off at Ainley Top were unable to head down the A629.

There were also huge queues through Elland, Rastrick and Brighouse and traffic also stretched back down Halifax Road in Huddersfield.
