WORK on improving safety for children walking to and from Elland schools will start next Monday and last for three weeks.

Calderdale Council will carry out the work on Long Wall, which is used by children at nearby Elland Church of England and St Patrick’s Catholic primary schools.

Clr Amanda Byrne, cabinet member for the environment, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this will cause. This work will make Long Wall a lot safer for the many children who use it.”

During this time the road will be reduced to one traffic lane, one way towards West Vale.

Traffic will be diverted on to Saddleworth Road which, apart from access, will become one way towards Elland Bridge.

While work is being undertaken lane closures will be extended to include the part of Saddleworth Road between the junction and Stainland, on weekends only.

Some bus services will also be to diverted during the works.
