ELTON John - one of the superstars of music - is coming to Huddersfield.

The rock giant is lined up for a massive gig at the Galpharm Stadium on June 3.

And stadium officials and fans hope that this time, they have got their man.

Sir Elton was pencilled in to play the stadium last summer, but the concert had to be cancelled.

But now tour promoters are confident the star will take to the stage on the Friday night to herald a highlight of the summer with the Field of Dreams concert.

And it will be another coup for stadium chiefs, who have already featured superstars such as REM, The Eagles, Bryan Adams, The Beautiful South and Blue in previous concerts.

Sir Elton - who rose to prominence in the early 1970s - is regarded as one of the top live performers.

His Galpharm Stadium gig will be a first for the venue. The concert is planned to be an all-seater event, with a special stage being created in front of the Kilner Bank stand.

Football-mad Elton is no stranger to football stadiums, having played concerts in many of them over the years. He has announced several stadium dates as part of his UK Summer Tour.

They include Southampton, Bolton, Norwich and Coventry as well as Huddersfield.

The shows feature Elton and his full band.

The `Rocket Man' will perform over two hours of hits from an incredible back catalogue spanning over three decades, including classics Your Song, Bitch is Back, Are You Ready For Love, Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me and I Want Love, as well as tracks from his new album Peachtree Road.

Stadium chief executive Ralph Rimmer is delighted.

"Our intention is to put on at least one major concert each year and they do not come much bigger than Elton John.

"It should be a fabulous evening and we are over the moon.

"Elton John attracts a much wider audience than some other acts and a lot of people should be descending on Huddersfield to enjoy what the town and stadium has to offer.

"There is a lot of work in attracting acts to the stadium. We have professional sport all year round and we also have to do work on the pitch, but we want to get a concert every year."

Clr John Smithson, a member of the Kirklees Stadium Development board, said: "It's fabulous news, for the stadium and for the town. I am sure thousands of fans will enjoy their visit to the Galpharm."

Although Elton has played shows in Leeds, Bradford and Halifax, the Field of Dreams concert will be his first performance in Huddersfield.

The concert title came about when organisers were informed that the Town ground had traditionally been known as the `Field of Dreams'.

Elton's last performance in the region were his sellout shows at Harewood House, Leeds, during the summer of 1999.

However, some may remember a visit to Krumlin, Barkisland near Huddersfield in August 1970 when Elton played the Yorkshire Folk, Blues & Jazz Festival.
