NEXT week’s Emley Show could be cancelled.

The event – scheduled for Saturday, August 4 – is likely to become the latest high-profile victim of Britain’s sodden summer.

Organisers carried out an inspection of the grounds on Tuesday.

They will conduct a final check tonight.

But event chairman Mike Hall said yesterday if the forecasted rain arrived today, it would have to be scrapped.

He added: “If the show was this Saturday, it would definitely be off.

“We have got concerns about a third of the showground and a lot of the car parking area.

“It looks like we could be without about two thirds of the normal parking and there’s a safety issue.

“The police have concerns, as do we, about the safety of visitors and competitors.

“It’s in the balance at the moment, but it doesn’t look good.”

This year’s show would be the 90th in its history.

The event had to be cancelled in 2001 because of the foot and mouth outbreak.

It was called off the following year because of bad weather.

This year’s Huddersfield Mela and Huddersfield Carnival have already fallen foul of the weather.

Emley Show treasurer Molly Cundy said: “We are keeping our fingers crossed, but it is in the lap of the gods.”

The Emley Show website – www.emleyshow.org.uk – said membership and entry fees already paid would be refunded.
