MORE than 70 guests were on hand to see the dedication of a new standard for a local charity group.

The new standard for the Royal British Legion Women's Section of the South and West Yorkshire County was dedicated by the Rev John Beardsmore at the group's annual conference on Saturday.

The dedication, which took place at the Mission Hall in Lord Street, was attended by the Countess of Scarborough, president of the Royal British Legion Women's Section Jane Gummer MBE and also Kirklees Mayor Clr Margaret Fearnley.

Press officer Thelma Kendall said it was an important moment for the group. She added: "A former president, Lady Shaw of Northstead, presented us with our previous standard.

"It has given us a great deal of service and our current president decided to donate a new standard."

Mrs Kendall said the standard was brought into the hall furled up and tied with ribbons and then unfurled as it was dedicated - which means it can be used in public.
