The final bolt has been tightened at a long-standing Huddersfield garage.

Stephen Byram Motor Engineers – known to many as the garage on the corner – has left its base for pastures new.

The family firm has been forced to move after the landlord of the premises won permission to build student flats and shops on the site at Kings Bridge Road, close to Huddersfield University.

But the business will carry on as new garage facilities have been found just six minutes away in Honley.

The firm is a truly a family business with Stephen’s wife Sue, 64, son Julian, 42, daughter Steph, 40 and brother-in-law Nick, 56, all employed.

Fourth mechanic Paul Berry, 51, is described as “virtually family”.

The four mechanics became locally renowned for always setting up a picnic table in the entrance to their garage to have their lunch break.

And their dinner-time tradition has been capture for posterity by an unlikely source, the Google Maps Streetview car.

Stephen, 65, said he was sad to leave after 30 years but had some fond memories of loyal customers, who he hoped would follow him to Honley.

“I’m a bit upset,” he said, “but that’s life and we’ve to move on and start again.”

He reminisced: “I started here with a broken leg after an accident playing football.

“I used to work for The Wharf on Firth Street which has been pulled down and is now student flats.

“When we were made redundant the landlord here used to do his vehicles with us.

“It was a wood yard.

“I started here with not even one ramp and we built it up from that.

“We’ve done alright, parking has been difficult and we have to work with the traffic wardens, but we’ve managed.

“I should be retiring but we’ve got to do it.”

“It’s been great getting to know the customers,” said Sue.

“A lot of them came from when Stephen was at The Wharf.

“We’ve got a customer who’s in his 90s and still driving.

“We want to thank the customers as their support’s been brilliant and we hope most of them follow us to Honley.”

The garage is now set to be demolished and a block with 59 student flats with shops beneath will be constructed.

The garage closed on Friday, March 25 and will re-open at Queens Square, Honley on Wednesday.
