A HUDDERSFIELD nightclub has closed down just two years since it opened.

Heaven And Hell in the old Co-op building in New Street suddenly shut after it emerged the club was losing money.

The club is one of a string of Heaven And Hell nightclubs across the north of England owned by Blackpool-based Entrepreneurial Leisure Ltd.

Entrepreneurial Leisure owner Peter Clarke said the Huddersfield club had done great business in its first year.

But clubgoers had drifted away in recent months and the club was losing money.

"We had to make a commercial decision," he said. "We were losing money and gave ourselves time to redress that.

"It didn't happen so we closed it now to save losing more money.

"We did excellent trade for the first 12 months, but for the last nine or so it has traded poorly. It made no sense to stay open."

Mr Clarke, 45, of Blackburn, said the company's board members were now discussing what to do with the landmark building.

But they were leaving all options open whether to sell or keep it.

"We may look to develop the property, but there are no plans at the moment," he said.

"We have completely open minds on it."

He said part of the problem was that many new bars have opened in Huddersfield and some have licences to serve alcohol until 2am.

"This has moved the centre of the town even further away from us," said Mr Clarke. "The club is a little off the circuit. If it was surrounded by the bars then things would have been different."

He said that problems with rowdy behaviour had also harmed the club's reputation.

He criticised the way the Huddersfield club had been managed in the past.

"It was mismanaged and that caused us some problems," he said. "But I have to say the police, fire and local council have been brilliant with us and we have worked very closely with them."
