A 24-year-old woman engineer from Huddersfield has won a national award.
Katy Linforth designs things such as emergency lighting and CCTV security systems for Kirklees Council's Design and Property Service.
At the Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards in London last week she won the Mary George Memorial Prize, which is awarded to the younger level of entrants.
She received a cheque for £500, a silver salver and a certificate.
This is the first time this award has been won by someone from a local authority and from within the building services industry.
Katy is now a designer, but she spent years in overalls getting her hands dirty installing and repairing aircraft electrical systems.
She studied A-levels in maths, physics, chemistry and computing at Greenhead College where she was named top engineer.
She then got a job as an apprentice engineer with British Airways and spent four years on aircraft maintenance in Perth, Manchester, Cardiff and Heathrow.
She did a degree in air transport engineering at City University in London and while doing it continued to work at Heathrow.
She joined Kirklees in June 2003 and designs fire alarms, emergency lighting, CCTV security systems and renewable energy projects for council buildings as well as managing the projects on site.
She is now working with students at Spen Valley Sports College to design and build a wind turbine which will provide power to the school's technical block.
Katy said: "I've always wanted to do engineering. There are three girls in my family, but I was always the Lego freak and peering under the bonnet of my dad's car.
"I get my motivation from taking a project that is someone's problem and creating a solution. That's where I get a buzz."
Katy is the daughter of Graham and Linda Linforth, of Cleckheaton, and her sisters are Joanne, 23, and 21-year-old Hannah.
She is the Spen Valley District Explorer Scout Commissioner and takes Scouts aged 14 to 18 on adventure activities.
She is also a former Scout who has done her Duke Of Edinburgh gold and Queen's Scout awards.
