Escapologist Antony Britton overcame gusting winds to complete his latest spectacular stunt.

The Linthwaite daredevil’s escape act provided the highlight of a summer fun day at Huddersfield Grammar School, Marsh, which also included an appearance by Dancing on Ice star Mark Hanretty and a motor bike stunt show.

Antony’s last escape act – Buried Alive – almost ended in tragedy when he had to be rescued unconscious from an earth-filled grave after being unable to break through to the surface. Antony, who cracked a rib in the stunt last September, had to be given oxygen to help him come round.

This time his challenge was to escape from a straitjacket as he hung upside down 50 ft in the air suspended by burning ropes.

Spectators watched as Antony contended with gusting winds to free himself from the restraint and return to earth.

He said: “It’s the first escape I have done since September so I was a little anxious.

“The high winds didn’t make it any better. We knew that this would make it a lot harder to escape and it did as the wind used me as a spinning top.”

Russel Erwood, escapology consultant, said: “The wind made this escape even more dangerous for Antony because the fire ended up burning inside the rope.

“Normally, we can see the flames which can be judged – but when you can’t see this and it’s burning from the inside it makes it impossible.”

Britton escaped the straitjacket and was brought back to the ground just in time before the ropes snapped.

One of the audience members said: “Full respect to him after nearly dying last year to come back and do this.

“I stood watching him struggling to get out 50ft above me and I was shocked. I have never seen anything like this before and it was unbelievable to see it live.”
