INSPECTORS have praised the many improvements at a school on a tough estate.

But they said there was room to do better.

Field Lane Primary School lies at the heart of the Field Lane estate in Rastrick.

The tough area has pockets of deprivation.

The Government's Ofsted inspectors said good progress had been made since the previous inspection, particularly over the past year.

The inspectors recognised the hard work in achieving higher standards.

Two years ago, morale at Field Lane was very poor, while levels discipline had dropped.

But thanks to acting head teacher Roy Hepplestone and current head teacher Jennifer Davies the situation has been turned around.

The Ofsted team found pupils were achieving well, thanks to strong relationships nurtured between the youngsters and staff, coupled to good teaching standards.

Leadership and management were also praised.

Pupils were now much better behaved, said the inspectors.

Community links and connections with other schools were found to be particularly strong.

In virtually all areas, the inspectors marked the school as being satisfactory to excellent.

Mrs Davies said: "This is a very positive report and we are very proud of it."
