Huddersfield Town fans in Marseille have spoken of terrifying scenes after a fellow Huddersfield supporter was thrown in a harbour during three days of violence at Euro 2016.

Tom Scandling, from Meltham, was pictured being punched and kicked to the ground before he was flung over a wall into the Marseille harbour on Friday.

Mr Scandling, who is believed to have served with the Army in Afghanistan, appeared to be sporting a black eye as he swam for the shore during the second of three days of trouble in the French port city.

A man, believed to Mr Scandling, is later filmed drying his Euro notes on the bathroom floor with a hotel hairdryer.

Town fan Dan Hallas, who posted the video on Twitter, said: “Sat on floor drying his money after yesterday’s harbour escapade!”

But an earlier tweet before England’s 1-1 draw with Russia he wrote: “People will die in Marseille tonight. It’s literally that bad.

“Marseille police are a complete joke. Why would you CS gas someone for trying to get a flag? No wonder it’s a ****** war zone.”

Danny Hoyle, 19, son of Town chairman Dean Hoyle, was also in France for the game.

He tweeted: “Get me home. I hate Marseille, what a horrible place. Forget the Russian World Cup too!”

Residents took to Facebook to condemn the violence – but they failed to agree on which set of supporters were primarily responsible.

Kevin Nuttall said: “So-called fans out for bother deserve the French authority hitting them hard especially when they are dealing with the terrorism threat. These fans need sending home and then their passports so they can’t be idiots abroad again.”

Helen Redfern said: “How do we know that they are English fans? Why blame English fans all the time? From what I’ve seen there are many nationals from many countries causing mayhem. Leave our lads alone.”

And Bob Carter added about Mr Scandling: “I don’t know this young man, who has been in the armed forces and served his country, and cannot understand why people are making such negative remarks.

“Perhaps he’s just gone to watch England with his mates and this has happened so before he’s judged, stop and think.”

More violence broke out when Russian supporters charged England fans at the Stade Velodrome, in Marseille, following the game on Saturday night.

Women and children were apparently trampled by Russian supporters as they pushed across into the England section of the stadium.

Panicking England fans were seen to be climbing fences to get out of the way of the Russian assault.

The BBC’s Nick Eardley wrote on Twitter: “Have never seen anything like this in football stadium. Utter panic in England as some Russians charged. Women and children trampled.
