TOURISTS are being urged to boycott Egypt by a Yorkshire Euro MP.

Tory Edward McMillan-Scott hit out after outgoing MP Dr Ayman Nour was thrown back into custody during the last phase of widely-criticised elections.

Mr McMillan-Scott, a European Parliament vice-president, chaired a delegation witnessing the first round of voting on November 9.

He said today: "The Mubarak regime is determined to hang on to power by blackening the reputation of legitimate opposition, like Dr Nour's party, and encouraging the Muslim Brotherhood to frighten voters.

"Tourists should think twice before booking holidays in a lovely country with a capricious and malevolent government."

Mr McMillan-Scott was responsible in March for freeing Dr Nour from prison, where he was detained by the authorities on January 29 after announcing his intention to challenge Mubarak's 24-year rule.

Mr McMillan-Scott's call comes as Egypt mounts its pre-Christmas tourism advertising blitz worldwide.
