CONTINENTAL sounds and smells have transformed Huddersfield's New Street into a European market town.

Busy shoppers are enjoying tasting and buying all the delights which the three-day Continental market has on offer.

Thirty stalls are groaning under the weight of an array of food, drink and fancy goods and tempting people to loosen their purse strings.

Sisters Alison Mitchell and Suzanne Short, both of Moldgreen, were wooed by the smell of fresh lavender wafting through the town centre.

"We're just having a mooch around. The smells are lovely, such a change," said Alison.

"I'm quite sure we'll be making a few purchases during the course of the day," said Suzanne.

Mrs Dee Prettle was visiting Huddersfield from her home in Matlock, Derbyshire, and was delighted to have come upon the market.

"It's lovely to try different produce from different countries. I'm so pleased to be here," she said.

Lynda Lockwood and husband Nigel, from Moldgreen, were packing 11-month-old Samuel's pram tray with goodies.

"We often travel to France and Germany; we love the way of life. We're buying bread, cheese and olives," said Lynda.

Dutch stallholder Gradus Van de Wardt was selling plants and shrubs. "Everyone is enjoying the atmosphere; the people in Huddersfield are very nice. I came here five years ago for another Continental market and I am happy to be back in this friendly town," he said.
