A unique theatre company is up for a national award.

Marsden’s Mikron Theatre Company, whose acting crew tours England’s canals on a narrowboat, is one of the finalists in the Canal and River Trust’s Living Waterways Awards.

The quirky organisation was founded 45 years ago by Mike Lucas to bring theatre to people who do not normally get to see it.

It was nominated for making a difference to the nation’s waterways with its annual tour of two shows, that tackle topical British issues through acting, song and music, in over 70 water-based venues.

Unlike other acting companies, actors who apply to join the four strong troupe each year must learn to man Mikron’s 71.8ft boat called Tyseley and live in a confined communal space for several months.

That is on top of being able to sing and play at least one musical instrument, erect their sets and sell tickets to audiences.

Pete Toon, Mikron’s producer, said he was thrilled to know that Mikron’s work was being recognised. He said: “At the heart of all we do here at Mikron is our relationship with the country’s inland waterways and the wonderful communities surrounding them. We are proud to be part of these communities and of our role in encouraging others to come along and experience this unique part of our heritage.”

Other organisations shortlisted for an award include a floating cinema, flood volunteers and those behind innovative water structures.

Richard Parry, chief executive of the Canal & River Trust, said: “The Living Waterways Awards celebrate the individuals, communities and organisations that have done the most to make a difference to the nation’s rivers, canals, lochs, lakes, reservoirs and docks.

“From telling the many stories of these waterways to bringing communities together and helping wildlife to thrive, these really are incredible achievements and we hope others will be inspired by our finalists.”

The winners will be announced on September 14 at an awards ceremony in Birmingham Town Hall.
