VILLAGE firefighters aiming to break a world record have delayed their gruelling bid until after winter.

The crews from Skelmanthorpe are aiming to smash the 24-hour ladder- climbing record.

They were due to try to beat the record of just over 65 miles over 24 hours in the middle of this month.

But they now want more time to get superfit and have delayed it until next April.

Then they will take turns to go up a 30ft ladder, before sliding down poles to the ground.

If they complete the challenge they will have each climbed more than the height of Mount Everest.

The challenge is being mounted to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK - a charity that grants wishes to children with life- threatening illnesses.
