A former Huddersfield Town goalkeeper has escaped a driving ban despite reaching 14 points on his licence.

Matt Glennon, 37, of Hepworth, was clocked at 56mph in a 40mph zone on Leeds Road at Rothwell.

He already had 10 points on his licence and was facing a ban under the totting up rules.

But Glennon, who is now playing for Scarborough Athletic, managed to keep his licence after he told Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court that he needed to travel a great deal as his wife was ill and unable to drive.

Glennon said he was holding down three jobs while working at least 50 hours a week.

He said his wife was unable to work due to a damaged disc in her back and was could not drive because of the medication she was taking.

He said he needed to take her to Leeds for her ongoing treatment and also had to drop his children off at school.

Magistrates agreed that he would face ‘exceptional hardship’ if his licence was taken.

But he was given four penalty points for speeding, taking his tally to 14 points, and warned that he would be banned if he did it again.
