THOUSANDS of students will get their GCSE exam results tomorrow.

And staff manning special helplines are expecting a number of calls from Huddersfield teenagers, concerned about their future plans.

The results will be announced at high schools across the town early tomorrow and will lead many youngsters on to further studies.

The national Exam Results Helpline – set up after last week’s A-level exams – has received a significant 506 calls so far from students based in Yorkshire who haven’t received the A-level exam results they expect and who want to find out about alternative future options.

Careers advisers from the Exam Results Helpline will be on hand until noon on Saturday, August 27, to provide information and advice to students receiving their GCSE exam results.

They can be reached on 0808 100 8000 (calls are free from landlines and select mobile networks).

On GCSE exam results day last year, the helpline offered a lifeline to almost 700 students and almost 9,000 students across the whole exam results period.

Sarah Bull, Careers Adviser and Exam Results Helpline Adviser, said: “It’s imperative that students get good advice about the range of options available to them after GCSEs.

“Taking A-levels is not for everyone, it may be that an apprenticeship or a BTEC is a much more suitable option – giving students the opportunity to gain employability skills, achieve a qualification and potentially earn a wage at the same time. Each student must look at what’s right for them.”

Lecturers and careers advisers at Kirklees College are telling teenagers not to panic if they don’t get the results they hoped for at GCSE.

The college, which specialises in vocational qualifications, promises to help students find a course that will get them on the right track.

Vice principal for curriculum Andrea Machell said: “We’re committed to helping everyone who walks through our doors or picks up the phone to us.

“We still have places available on a wide range of courses and will discuss a person’s options with them to guide them through the next steps.

“The important message is that they do not panic about finding a college course, we have a team of expert advisers ready to enrol students onto a suitable programme.”

Students who need advice from Kirklees College can call 01484 437070 to speak to a trained information officer about the options available.
