The events were staged at Lepton Highlanders Sports Ground yesterday with participants choosing from either a three, seven or 12.4 mile walk (20km).

Cyclists also got in on the action, embarking on either a seven, 17 or 18.5 mile course.

Meanwhile, a toddler teddy bear hunt, and buggy and wheelchair push were held in Beaumont Park.

The event, now in its 24th year, has previously raised £770,000 for a wide range of charities and good causes.

This year’s event attracted around 300 people and looks set to raise about £15,000.

Many of those taking part in yesterday’s event were raising money for the Oliver Field Appeal including Oliver’s brother, Sam – who himself spent several days in hospital after being suddenly struck down with a deadly strain of meningitis.

Two-year-old Oliver is suffering a rare form of cancer.

Oliver’s dad, Paul Field, said: “Sam did the teddy bear walk and has raised £200 in sponsorship.

“A lot of his friends from Dalton Junior school took part which was lovely to see.

“We also had a number of people entering walks here at Highlanders and we appreciate their support for the appeal.”

Mr Field said they had hoped Oliver would be able to attend the event but they were going to see him in Leeds General Infirmary afterwards.

Other participants included Lepton Just For Fun Pre-School and Out of School Club.

Manager Pip Youds said: “There was a group of four of us from the nursery and we completed the three-mile walk. All our sponsorship will go towards equipment and resources for the club.”

Fundraisers for Ruddi’s Retreat took on the seven-mile challenge as part of their training for a Three Peaks challenge at the end of June.

Cyclist Ken Roberts, Secretary of Huddersfield CTC, organised two of the cycle routes with fellow cyclist Alan Priin heading up the 18.5 mile mountain bike event.

“They did really well,” said Ken. “There was a great atmosphere before we set off.”

Cyclist David Woodhead, 47, of Slaithwaite, said: “We have done it before and just woke up and thought we would come down and enter on the day.

“My wife Penny and youngest son Owen completed the seven-mile walk and I did the 18.5 bike ride with sons Jonathon and Laurence.”

A team of eight people raised £1,000 for Bowel Cancer UK. Natalie Gibson who is a lawyer with Makin Dixon solicitors in Huddersfield lost her mother Sharon in February this year to the disease at the age of just aged 52. The team included Natalie along with David Prowse, Jennifer Stroud, Emma Blacktin, Richard Edge, Claire Edgar, Hannah Waller and Chris Wright.

Kirklees Nordic Walking group had an 11-strong team to enter the seven-mile walk.

Leader Gillian Logan said: “They are all raising money for their own charities and many of them have chosen the Oliver Field Appeal.”

Lions clubs of Huddersfield organise the event with entrants allowed to fundraise for their chosen charity.

Huddersfield Lions secretary Bob Armitage said: “It’s been really good. Everybody has come back who should be back!”

Fellow Huddersfield Lion Chris Makin added: “The sponsorship has been fantastic. We have had a number of entrants who have passed the £500 mark and one who has raised £630.”

Thanks goes to the volunteers who helped make the event run smoothly. They came from many groups including the Lions clubs in Huddersfield, Holmfirth and Meltham, Denby Dale and Colne Valley, CTC Cycle Club, Examiner staff, Kirklees Countryside Volunteers, Lepton Highlanders, Raynet, Holme Valley Mountain Rescue and St John Ambulance.
