Slaithwaite Moonraking Festival won for reaching out to hundreds of people both from within its community and also far and wide for 30 years.

It now lasts a week with lantern-making workshops run by local artists and volunteers throughout February half-term. This year more than 950 adults and children of all ages attended and created 215 beautiful sculptural lanterns depicting international landmarks.

Speaking about the award, one of the organisers, Gill Bond, said: “Winning the award is a testament to the people of Slaithwaite and all the volunteers who come together year after year to help make this event happen.

“We hold it in winter because it cheers everyone up and of course the moon is easier to see then too.”

The judges said: “A tough choice with three excellent events but the winner has turned part of Huddersfield’s heritage into a community event in the finest sense of the word.”

* The runners-up were Huddersfield park run and Heart of Hud and the category was sponsored by Cummins Turbo Technologies.
