IT’S a crippling condition that affects up to one in 25 people.

But few have heard of fibromyalgia because the disease, which causes repeated pain all around the body, has no visible symptoms and its cause is unknown.

That’s why Fibrofriends Kirklees hopes to provide support and friendship for people who have the condition.

Fibrofriends, which has previously held informal meetings in cafes, holds its first official monthly meeting at Huddersfield Library meeting room on November 19 from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Anyone with the condition, or who cares for some with the condition, is welcome to attend.

Fibromyalgia, which also causes exhaustion in a similar way to ME, leaves a lot of its sufferers immobile, isolated and depressed. But Fibrofriends was set up to combat this.

Tammy Williams, who helped start the group in June, said: “Fibromyalgia doesn’t have a high enough profile for the Government to put in any money. It’s not seen as a priority because it’s invisible.

“Finding specialist help is a nightmare. Some doctors still think it’s all in the mind like they used to do with ME but it affects your whole life.”

Tammy, who was diagnosed with the condition three years ago, added: “We want to reach out to everyone else and show them that you can have a life and be positive. It’s not doom and gloom.

“Maintaining a social life is difficult but if you have a reason to get out of bed that improves your mood already.

“If we get some money we could pay the rent for a while and start subsidising complimentary therapy or whatever people find makes them feel better.”

Fibromyalgia is a widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder.

Most patients with fibromyalgia complain that they ache all over. Their muscles may feel like they have been pulled or overworked. Sometimes the muscles twitch or burn.

More women than men are affected by fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia can appear in people of all ages.
