When you’re in constant pain there’s nothing like a good moan with other sufferers.

But the Self-Management of Pain Group (SMPG) is about more than that.

The group offers social events, trips and, above all, support.

SMPG, which has members in Huddersfield and Halifax, formed three-and-a-half years ago at the end of an NHS pain management course.

Founding member David Wait said: “I suggested we should continue to meet after the six-week course finished.”

The group, which meets fortnightly at pubs in Huddersfield and Halifax, helps members make the most of healthcare services and shares pointers on how to best manage pain.

SMPG last year received £104 from the Examiner Wish fund, which partly paid for a trip to York.

This year the group is hoping for cash to pay for a barge trip along the Calder-Hebble Navigation, with Mirfield-based charity The Safe Anchor Trust.

Mr Wait, 49, of Kirkheaton, has osteoporosis, a condition which weakens bones, while other members have other chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, which causes widespread pain and fatigue.

David said: “When you’re dealing with pain on a daily basis you get into a rut where you feel you can’t do anything anymore.

“We hope the group reverses your mind and gives you a more positive way of thinking.

“For some of the group it’s about being able to get out of the house and have a reason to get out.

“Members can make friends who can relate to their pain; it really benefits them.

“We’re all on the same level and we can have a moan and groan; it’s great!”

And it isn’t just people with chronic pain who benefit from SMPG, carers and relatives also do.

Mr Wait added: “It’s a really social group.”
