THERE are just three days left to apply for a slice of the Examiner’s £30,000 Community Cash Giveaway.

Community groups only have until February 27 to bid for up to £900 each from the fund, which has been provided by the Community Foundation For Calderdale.

So far, more than 100 organisations have put in requests for funding, totalling £35,000.

A panel of judges will sift through the entries to allocate the money, in accordance with Grassroots Grants criteria.

Grassroots Grants is the pot of Government money from where the £30,000 on offer comes.

It is part of a £130m nationwide drive by the Government to support thousands of groups and projects which improve local communities.

The Community Foundation for Calderdale is responsible for giving this money out to groups in Calderdale and Kirklees.

Groups must be run by volunteers, have been operating for 12 months and have an annual income of less than £20,000.

Natalie Mitchell, marketing and development manager for the Community Foundation for Calderdale, said they were very pleased with the number of groups who have applied to take advantage of the cash on offer.

“We are absolutely delighted with the response and that the money is very likely to be all spent up.

“It’s vital that the grassroots groups across Kirklees get this money and we are proud to be working with the Examiner to ensure this happens.”

A shortlist of applicants will be drawn up next week ready for the judges to examine.

The Community Fund For Calderdale also helps groups seek grant funding from many sources.

Those who have previously been successfully helped include Huddersfield Town Disabled Supporters’ Club and Huddersfield MDF Bi Polar Self-Help Group, for people with manic depression and their carers.

The supporters’ group received £250, which they used to buy a TV and video for their headquarters in Almondbury.

The money from the £30,000 giveaway will be handed out by the end of March.
