AN EXHIBITION about Yorkshire’s first recognised lesbian is set to tour Calderdale libraries as a TV documentary is aired.

Anne Lister of Shibden Hall was a Yorkshire landowner, industrialist, traveller and diarist.

She was also a lesbian who defied the conventions of the time by marrying and living with her female partner.

She kept a detailed account of her life, loves and emotions, which mounts to more than four million words.

Now an exhibition, collated by the West Yorkshire Archive Service, will run as a BBC drama is set to air.

Entitled The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister, the TV drama features actress Maxine Peake and will air on BBC2, although a date has not yet confirmed.

An exhibition about the life of Anne Lister has gone on show at the Central Library in Halifax and will be there until May 1.

Thereafter it will move on to Shibden Library and then tour Calderdale libraries, before moving on to London.
