PUPILS in Rawthorpe have had an exotic visitor to their playground – and now hope to find its pining owner.

An African grey parrot paid a visit to Netherhall Learning Campus on Nether Hall Avenue on Wednesday.

A group of Year 9 pupils spotted the bird in the grounds of the school, which is a combined campus for infant, junior and high school pupils.

The boys – Brandon Smith, Aiden Donaghey, Niall Cummins, Ashton Quashie and Ben Sykes – decided to rescue the lost bird.

Brandon coaxed it with a pear from his bag and, with the help of the infant school secretary, managed to get it into a box.

Brandon said: “I had a pear in my bag so we decided to see if it was hungry. The parrot ate some of the pear and seemed very tame.”

The parrot was driven to a local vet’s surgery, where it was checked out and found to be healthy.

It is not known what gender the parrot is and vets are waiting to see if its owners come forward. If they don’t, the surgery will try and rehome the bird via the RSPCA or privately.

Anyone with information about the parrot’s owner should contact Donaldson and Partners vets on 01484 421512.
