A single cannabis joint damages the lungs as much as smoking up to five cigarettes in one go, experts claimed today. The drug forces the lungs to work harder by obstructing air flow and causes chest tightness and wheezing, a study found. The news comes after research published last week showed cannabis could double the risk of psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia.

Crewman dies

The organisers of a national sailing regatta were today deciding whether to continue the competition after a crew member died. The victim, who has not been named, is thought to have capsized. He was taking part in the Laser 4000 Nationals at South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club near Abersoch, North Wales.
